PANDU UJI PROTON SAGA FLX 1.3L

Apa yang kita dapat lihat sekarang, banyak kereta-kereta luar negara dan import menggunakan teknologi CVT terutama kereta-kereta mewah khususnya. Untuk itu, PROTON mengambil inisiatif untuk menambahbaik model Proton Saga FL ini dengan menambah ciri-ciri CVT yang dipasang pada model ini serta dinamakan Proton Saga FLX. Didatangkan dengan enjin berkemampuan 1.3 liter sudah cukup memberikan kepuasan kepada penggunanya nanti.

Gear 6 kelajuan pada FLX ini akan melangkah ke Mod Auto yang dipanggil SAT yang melibatkan suis pada sebelah gear tersebut. Ia juga dipanggil sebagai Mod L. Seperti yang kita semua tahu, Mod L ini adalah mod dimana kereta berada dalam keadaan gear yang rendah dan ini menyebabkan kereta lebih 'pick up' dan ia sesuai digunakan semasa kereta hendak menaiki bukit ataupun boleh digunakan semasa menurun bukit yang curam.

Selain itu, dengan penggunaan kotakj CVT ini ia juga mampu menjimatkan penggunaan petrol dan ia mampu memanjangkan jumlah hayat enjin kereta anda.

Antara perbezaan lain yang kami dapati adalah untuk RPM kereta FLX ini, pada RPM 2,000 ia mampu mencapai kelajuan pada 80 km/h manakala pada RPM 2,500 pula ia mampu pergi kepada 100 km/h dan ini berbeza dengan Proton Saga FL Auto. Untuk FL Auto ianya lebih 500 RPM berbanding FLX. Pada kelajuan 80 km/h, RPM untuk FL Auto ini menunjukkan sekitar RPM 2,400 ke 2,500 manakala pada kelajuan 100 km/h pula pada RPM 3,000.

TEST DRIVE PROTON SAGA FL BARU

Apa khabar semua, dah lama aku tak update blog ni so hari ni nak update lah setelah aku selesai membuat sesi pandu uji Proton Saga FL baru milik bapaku sendiri, hehehehe... Dari segi handling memang mantap jika dibandingkan dengan kereta lain yang sama CC dengannya. Pendek kata kalau pandu kereta ni lebih kurang sama macam pandu Proton Saga BLM. Yang aku nak puji adalah ciri-ciri aksesori yang ditambah termasuk bumper belakang, memang dah cukup cantik manakala rekaan untuk lampu hadapan memang nampak lebih moden.

Untuk aksesori dalaman pula, butang kawalan yang terdapat pada stereng memudahkan lagi untuk kita mengawal sistem audio. Manakala butang kawalan ditambah untuk mengawal cermin belakang. Pendek kata Proton Saga FL ni penuh ciri-ciri kemewahan namun harganya masih lagi murah dan berpatutan.

MITSUBISHI ASX DILANCARKAN DENGAN HARGA RM139,980




The Mitsubishi ASX is here. This is the third and final part of the new model onslaught (after the Pajero and Lancer Sportback) by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, which surely must be the busiest car company in the second half of 2010. The ASX, which was introduced in Japan as the RVR earlier this year, is billed as a compact crossover that aims to combine the good points of an SUV and a sedan.

At under 4.3 metres long, the ASX is noticeably smaller in footprint than the CR-V and X-Trail, but its 2,670 mm wheelbase actually betters the Honda and Nissan. The platform sitting under this 2WD crossover is adapted from bigger brother Outlander. Going with the compact and agile theme, turning radius is a class leading 5.3 metres. The suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and multi links at the back, while the steering is an electric system.

The ASX is powered by the 4B11 2.0-litre engine as found in the Lancer. This DOHC 16-valve MIVEC unit produces 150 PS and 197 Nm of torque, which is slightly less than the C-segment sedan’s 155 PS/199 Nm, but it’s tuned to suit this application. Doing transmission duty is an INVECS-III CVT with 6-speed Sports Mode, controllable via nice and long magnesium shift paddles.

The kit list includes Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist, dual front airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, leather seats, cruise control, auto air con and a 2-DIN touch screen ICE system. The latter incorporates a reverse camera. Fully imported CBU from Japan, the ASX retails at RM139,980 OTR inclusive of insurance.

We’ve driven the ASX already – once in Japan and once in beautiful Langkawi – so look after the jump for our impressions and verdict!

Just a raised Lancer? That was what I expected before driving the ASX, but after two rounds of testing Mitsubishi’s compact crossover at the company’s Tokachi proving ground in Hokkaido and then closer to home in Langkawi, the ASX proved to be much more than that. Certain aspects that we don’t like about the Lancer have disappeared altogether!

Let’s start from the inside. It won’t take long to notice the more premium feel and better quality over the Lancer. Instead of making the entire dash panel out of soft plastic, Mitsubishi added a piece of slush material on the surface of the dash where your hands can reach. The front door caps are also of the same material, although the rear ones don’t get this treatment. The area where you rest your elbows are also padded and leather covered.

Leather is also found covering the seats, steering wheel and gear knob. It’s all in black, and the centre stack is in glossy black as well. There’s some silver and chrome accents to break the monotony. As usual for Mitsubishi, the area central to the driver is nicely done – the instruments are sporty and classy at the same time, the high-res full colour LCD trip computer display is cool and the three-spoke wheel feels as good as it looks. Making a repeat appearance are those long magnesium shift paddles that have a substantial action.

The centrepiece of the dash is the Kenwood touch screen entertainment system. This 2-DIN unit also doubles up as a display for the reverse camera. All the above combine for a pleasant interior that’s streets ahead of the Lancer in quality and fit – no unsightly gaps here! A good driving position is easy to find, the steering is adjustable for reach and the driver’s seat has a big height range.

We’re no big fans of the 4B11/CVT combo in the Lancer, which tiring drone is very uninspiring. And while the ASX uses the same engine and gearbox, the workings seem to much better insulated from the cabin. It feels sprightly from the get go, and there’s less of the elastic CVT response when you floor the pedal. Besides feeling more natural in D, the gearbox’s manual mode comes in handy in fast driving where you need immediate response. Performance and acceleration is entirely adequate, and there weren’t any situation where it was found to be lacking.

I was pleasantly surprised by the performance and looked up the specs. More surprise was in store. The ASX’s low kerb weight of 1,375 kg is actually 10 kg less than the Lancer GT’s, while the comparatively lethargic feeling Honda CR-V weighs 1,540 kg. That explains it all.

The ASX’s compact footprint suggests an agile crossover, and it delivers in the drive. The well weighted steering is precise and has reasonable feel, while the other controls feel natural. Wearing 16-inch wheels with high profile 65 series rubber, the ASX rides very well over bad roads, soaking up most of what Langkawi tarmac threw at it with ease. There’s some body roll in corners, but it’s not of the off-putting variety and doesn’t distract from the business of driving.

It’s no sports car of course, but the ASX isn’t too uncomfortable under hard driving, and you won’t feel awkward pushing it too. The addition of ASC in addition to ABS and EBD is commendable, as is the driver’s knee airbag.

Boot space isn’t spectacular but decent considering there’s a full sized spare inside the car, and the load height is quite low. It would be great if the Lancer Sportback’s handy seat folding levers were included here as well. Although the ASX’s wheelbase is 50 mm longer than the CR-V’s, it’s not reflected in rear legroom, which is more apparent in the Honda, proving that bare figures don’t tell the full story. Headroom isn’t generous, but adequate, and the ASX feels more compact inside than in a CR-V or Nissan X-Trail. Feels roomier than the Peugeot 3008, though.

There’s nothing groundbreaking about the Mitsubishi ASX, but it’s a likable car that’s decent to drive. Personally, I like its compact size, but reckon that there will be as many whose idea of an SUV/crossover is of a bulkier vehicle with more presence. If that’s you, the ASX won’t be in contention, but if you’re sold, the ASX’s attractive sub RM140K price tag plus two years free maintenance package will help to seal the deal.

Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing Test Drive

We’ve been itching to drive the Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing the moment we saw it in the metal and read through the spec sheet. From the amount of interest generated by the posts about it on this blog, we reckon that you would also want to know how a RM115,000 Proton with an upgraded Campro, trick suspension and mega brakes would drive. Well, we just attended a media test drive session of the Neo R3 at Proton’s test track and guess what, it’s a cracker!

First, let’s get some standard Neo complaints out of the way. I’m not the tallest guy around at 1.75 m, but with helmet on, seat pushed to its lowest point and in my correct driving position, my head is too close to the roof and sun visor for comfort, and I’m looking out from the top part of the windscreen. This is a design flaw that can’t be reversed, so we’ll have to live with it. The seats and steering wheel can be more special but the reason there’s no Momo or Recaro here is because R3 wanted to put this car to market in a short period without compromising safety (for instance, changing the seats and their mounting points would have required safety testing, and the hassle won’t be worth it for a 25-unit run).

Starting the car and moving off is simple, no elephant strength required for the standard clutch, and the Neo slots through the gates cleanly; the action is a little slicker than the standard Neo CPS if memory serves right. As you’ve heard in our previous post, the Neo R3 sounds much more “fierce” than the standard car, but it’s not just exhaust rumble. As you pull away from low to mid rpm, you can hear the engine sucking in air and this hissing intake noise goes well with the deep voice of the exhaust. There are no torque dips or holes in the power delivery, although one needs to remember that this is a high-revving NA engine, not a turbo car that jumps off the line – you wouldn’t fault a Type R for feeling normal below the VTEC zone, would you?

Personally, I like the sensation of the Campro CPS’ switch over point, where the engine gains a second wind before rushing to the redline with an urgency not seen below 4,000 rpm. The feeling is intensified and prolonged here, as the Neo R3’s 145 bhp Campro redlines at 7,500 rpm. The fact that we’re running out of dial space (last figure is 8,000 rpm) at that point makes it even more fascinating. The shortened gear ratios make reaching those engine speeds an easy task that can be repeated from first to fourth (we didn’t max the car in top gear). In truth, the engine felt like it could still go on at 7,500 rpm. It won’t be too much to describe this as “Type R Lite” experience.

Besides the high speed oval with 45 degree banking, we also drove the R3 in the middle of the track, where Proton designed slalom, acceleration and braking tests. Without any official timing, we can only subjectively say that those four-pot AP Racing brakes provide enormous stopping power, and you’ll never run out of brakes in this car unless you’re being silly. The slalom run showed off the lighter headed Neo R3’s sharp turn in and good grip from the Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres, but instead of super glue like adhesion, the Proton let its tail loose a bit as it danced through the cones. Body control is excellent.

One of the major highlights of this car is the Ohlins adjustable suspension. These Dual Flow Valve items are bespoke and tuned according to R3 given specs. Proton says that it gives the Neo R3 a compliant ride even on the worst roads, and although we did not get to test that claim, we got a hint of the suspension’s real world comfort at the track. With four in the car, we went pass a rough surface with a dip in the road. No harshness, no bottoming out and no “aftershocks”.

How does DFV work? Explained simply, when the damper encounters high shaft speeds (such as when the car passes a pothole or undulations) the “second valve” opens for faster oil escape. This fast reaction gives the car optimum traction and allows for constant contact between tyre and road, so there’s reduced impact.

Trick suspension aside, no other chassis mods were required. R3 boss and top drifter Tengku Djan said that the Neo’s structural integrity was already very good, and its chassis stiff and rigid enough. Most of the 62 kg weight reduction is at the car’s front end, and the wheels shave about 2 kg of unsprung weight at each corner.

Unfortunately, we were only given a short time behind the wheel, and did not have the chance to try the ultimate Satria Neo on the road. One day, perhaps. Yes, 145 bhp is not much, and RM115K is a lot of money (quality items don’t come cheap), but the Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing pushes all the right buttons and delivers the right sensations for the enthusiast. Some may think of those 25 owners as fools, but I’ll call them lucky fools.
